Road biking and the great steps of cycling
For many years, Valtellina has hosted some of the most prestigious national and international cycling races, including the Granfondo Internazionale Marco Pantani, the Mapei Re Stelvio and, of course, the Giro d’Italia, which has helped consecrate its most iconic Alpine passes to the history of two wheels:
- the Stelvio Pass from Bormio, a 21.5-kilometer climb with an elevation gain of 1,500 m and gradients of up to 14 percent, several times the Cima Coppi of the Giro d’Italia;
- the Gavia Pass, with 1044 meters of elevation gain and an average gradient of 7% with peaks of 16%;
- the Mortirolo Pass, with the climb from Mazzo di Valtellina considered one of the toughest and most challenging in all of Europe (12.5 km to overcome 1,300 meters of elevation gain, with an average gradient of 10.5 percent and maximum gradient just under 18 percent), a destination for cyclists from all over the world.
